Here’s an interesting picture of an Olympic gymnast exchanging money with a judge during the men’s team gymnastics competition.
Bribery? Corruption? Here’s what’s really going on, =).
During the competition, the judges gave one athlete a terrible score, which left Japan in 4th place. The Japanese team thought the judges mis-scored Uchimura’s routine, so they appealed.
Apparently, there’s a rule in Olympic gymnastics that says teams must pay a fee to make an appeal. So the Japan team gave the judges a stack of $100’s. It seems that the money is required to make sure teams don’t make a lot of challenges.
In the end, Japan’s appeal was successful, and the stack of $100s was returned.
